According to the Chinese zodiac, 2011 is the year of the golden rabbit, the fourth sign in the Chinese zodiac which consists of 12 animals. The rabbit is believed to bring a year of calm and quiet after the year of the fierce tiger in 2010. The Temple City Chinese American Association (TCCAA) and Temple City hosted the celebration of live entertainment, free food, and cultural education. "Temple City has a lot of diversity," said Stella Yu, a volunteer with the TCCAA and wife of council man Vincent Yu. "The community has come together for a common theme. Everyone is together to celebrate the new year." The Chinese New Year falls on the first day of the first moon on the lunar calendar. For 2011, that day lands on Feb. 3. In Chinese culture, the actual day of the new year is not as important as its meaning, and New Year celebrations will often take place before or after the day. "The importance of the Chinese New Year is new life," Yu said. "It is a new year as a family. Chinese have strong family ties and they enjoy being united. It is also a celebration of good fortune for the new year." The Lunar Celebration was from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at 9701 Las tunas Drive, and Planning Commissioner Ed Chen was the master of ceremonies for the event Restaurants from the area, including A Golden House, Sinbala, HK Gourmet Delight and Bull Demon King Cafe donated traditional cuisine for guests to enjoy. The live entertainment was provided by Temple City's Shin Dance Studio and Chin Woo Quan Tae Kwon Do Academy. Students ranging from ages 3 to adults performed traditional and contemporary Chinese dances choreographed by Shin Wang, instructor of the studio at 9621 Las Tunas Drive. "It was a rush of emotion," said Nicole Wei, 14, of Arcadia about her studio's performance. "I think people are misinformed of what Chinese dancing really is. We get to show what its become and the evolution." Christina Sia, 20, of El Monte and Jacqueluene Lin, 20, of Hacienda Heights feel the studio has offered them a sense of pride of their Chinese heritage and an education about their culture. Raffle tickets were sold by The TCCAA to the crowd for prizes donated by the association. A portion of the proceeds are planned to be donated to Temple City High School for the senior's grad night celebration, representatives said. "It's a great event," Chen said about the festivities. It's good to see cultures celebrated among Americans." 该E-mail地址已受到防止垃圾邮件机器人的保护,您必须启用浏览器的Java Script才能看到。 626-962-8811, ext. 2705 |
